Lesson #2: The Adaptive Edge

How do you balance risk and growth?

If you’re too ambitious and strive far past your current capabilities, you risk catastrophe and burnout.

If you’re not ambitious enough and strive far below your current capabilities, you risk stagnation and plateaus.

Like a lot of things, the ideal sits somewhere in the middle.

Those who act out of a fear of failure tend to play within the extremes. If they could never achieve it anyway, the failure doesn’t feel so bad. And if they settle into the bottom of their capabilities, well at least they didn’t fail.

The Goldilocks zone is the adaptive edge. It’s the space just beyond your current capabilities. It’s the place where you feel stretched but still stable. Where you’re learning, adapting, and growing.

So endeavor towards the adaptive edge of your current capabilities for the best results.
